We all heard lots of impressive stories about Abraham Lincoln, Yes he was a great leader. But did you know that he was one of the biggest cat lovers in the history?.
He loved cats so much that he saved many strays and raised a few in the White House.
Abraham Lincoln the sixteenth president of the United States, was born on February 12, 1809, in a one-room wood cabin on the Sinking Spring Farm close to Hodgenville, Kentucky
He was the president of the united states since March 1961 until he got assassinated (April 1865).
President Lincoln was a huge cat lover, he adopted many strays and kept a few in the white house. He had two favorite kittens (Tabby and Dixie), He was never ashamed to show how much he loved his cats
When his wife was asked about her husband’s hobbies she immediately said ”cats”.
Once he fed Tabby from the dinner table at a formal event in the white house and when his wife complained he replied ”If the gold fork was good enough for President James Buchanan, I think it is good enough for Tabby”.
At the time of the Civil War in March 1865, President Lincoln was going to visit General Ulysses Grant to join later in the siege of Petersburg in Virginia.
While he was in City Point at the General’s headquarters, he saw in the Telegraph hut 3 little kittens; he walked right towards them, he carried and cuddled them right on his lap then he said “Kitties, thank God you are cats, and can’t understand this terrible strife that is going on” as Admiral David Poter reported.
And he made sure not to leave before he charged a colonel to feed the little kittens and take good care of them.
Even that Abraham Lincoln was deeply in love with cats we can’t say that he was a crazy cat person.
He was nothing less than a kind-hearted person who lived for his country but he wasn’t too busy to give love and care for the little furry creatures.
